There are many brands of probiotics on sale at food supplement stores. These typically contain between 2 billion and 5 billion. To the lay person, it may seem like a lot of friendly bacteria. But the amount is actually far too little to create any significant impact.
The colon or large intestine of a typical adult has an estimated 100 trillion bacteria. That is 10^14 or 100,000,000,000,000 (one followed by 14 zeroes), or 100,000 billion! So if you just take one or two capsules that each contains a few billion probiotics, it is not going to produce much results. Moreover, the friendly bacteria may no longer be active. Most brands guarantee the bacteria to be active only at the time of manufacture, not at the time you take them.
